The Wearable Wedding Dresses Trends

Getting married? If you want a change from the traditional look, take note of the trends to see you up the aisle in style

Wedding trends don’t evolve quite as rapidly as the rest of fashion. However subtle nuances, whether influenced by celebrities, a royal wedding or a collective shift in design direction, do inform a change in aesthetic that grows organically year on year.

Whether you want a wedding dress with a modern twist, or you’d rather wear flats and a jumpsuit, there are plenty of alternatives that rise to the occasion without doing away completely with tradition.

The bridal jumpsuit

The popularity of the all-in-one has soared in recent years, upgrading its status from a chic occasionwear option to the outfit of choice for the alternative bride. Sleekly tailored but less androgynous than a trouser suit, touches of embellishment and frills give it extra oomph. Easy to move and – importantly – dance in, it’s a great choice for an urban wedding.

Modern wedding dresses

Meringues be gone! Most brides these days shy away from huge, taffeta dresses of the 1970s, instead favouring swathes of silk or lace, with modern cuts and midi hemlines.

Colour wedding dresses

Pastel tones have long been the preserve of bridesmaid dresses, but the trend for soft-hued bridal gowns has gained momentum. Muted blush or grey is universally flattering and a gentle way to make a statement. Plus if you’re keen to reduce the cost per wear of your special dress, a colourful choice is a savvy option.

Flat shoes for brides

There’s pressure to look consistently picture-perfect on the big day, but that needn’t be at the cost of comfort. We’ve almost all witnessed the bride who changes into a pair of trainers or flip-flops for the reception, so eager is she to break free from teetering heels. Break the mould and wear flats from the start – there are plenty of styles on offer.
